If you have ever looked at the ingredient list on a Pūraka product and wondered what a CO2 extract is, this is the post for you. It is one of those ingredients that does not get much attention in mainstream skincare — not because it is obscure, but because it is expensive to produce and most brands simply do not bother. I do. Here is why.
What a CO2 extract actually is
CO2 extraction is a method of pulling the active compounds from a plant using carbon dioxide under high pressure.
At the right temperature and pressure, CO2 becomes what is called a supercritical fluid — something between a liquid and a gas — that is extraordinarily effective at drawing out the full spectrum of a plant's beneficial compounds.

The result is an extract that is remarkably concentrated and complete. All the fatty acids, antioxidants, vitamins, and phytonutrients that make a botanical ingredient valuable are preserved intact. Nothing is degraded by heat. Nothing is diluted by solvent residue.
Compare this to a standard solvent extraction — the method used to produce most botanical extracts in conventional skincare — and the difference is significant. Solvent extraction uses chemical solvents like hexane to pull compounds from plant material. It is cheaper and faster, but it leaves behind solvent residue and degrades many of the heat-sensitive compounds that are most valuable for skin.
Why I chose CO2 extracts for Pūraka
I use botanical CO2 extracts in several Pūraka formulations — including rosehip and seabuckthorn in the Anti-Ageing Cream, and frankincense in the Active Day Cream and Hydrating Super Serum.
I chose them because they represent the best possible version of those ingredients. When I am formulating a product, I want the ingredients to do what they are supposed to do. A CO2-extracted rosehip brings a significantly richer concentration of vitamin A and essential fatty acids than a standard rosehip oil. A CO2-extracted frankincense carries the full resinous complexity of the plant — compounds that a cheaper extraction method would simply leave behind.
This is what I mean when I say nothing in Pūraka is in here by accident. The CO2 extracts cost more. I use them anyway because the alternative is an ingredient that sounds impressive but delivers less.
What this means for your skin
For you, practically, it means the botanical ingredients in Pūraka are working at a higher level of potency and purity than most skincare products can offer. The rosehip is genuinely rich in vitamin A. The frankincense carries its full complement of boswellic compounds. The seabuckthorn delivers its extraordinary concentration of omega fatty acids intact.
It is the difference between an ingredient and a placeholder. I will always choose the ingredient.
